Project:Grand Chancellor Hotel
Client:Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority
Together with Jack Harris, this collaborative, highly motivated team accomplished one of the greatest challenges they had ever faced, a life changing project neither had ever expected to attempt or complete deconstructing the 28 story reinforced concrete framed Grand Chancellor Hotel and car park building, which colloquially became known as the leaning tower of Christchurch.
It was a total high-rise construction in reverse on a confined site whilst enduring a large number of sizeable aftershocks and was the highest priority building for demolition in Christchurch. The precarious nature and lean of the structure meant there was a large drop zone and a ‘no go’ cordon in place around the building restricting access to the area, which was within the red zone, for essential purposes only. This project was to be the most dangerous and complex demolition undertaken in New Zealand; the US Emergency Response Team advised the building was “in the worst condition for demolition” they had ever seen.
